She rose to fame in 1930 with her role as Lola-Lola in The Blue Angel, directed by Josef von Sternberg, who became her mentor and collaborator. She starred in many Hollywood films, such as Morocco, Shanghai Express, Desire and Destry Rides Again, and became known for her beauty, voice, sophistication and sensuality.
She was also a humanitarian who supported exiles and troops during World War II, earning several honors from the United States, France, Belgium and Israel. She is considered one of the greatest female screen legends of classic Hollywood cinema.
